Another in the series of underwater adventures to document schooling and feeding behavior of the Pacific Sailfish. Along the way I hope to encounter other oceanic pelagic species such as Dolphin, Tuna, Dorado, Turtles, Manta Rays as well as baitfish under floating logs. Besides filming free-swimming sailfish, I am going to film a sailfish that has been captured and then released with a pop up satellite tag. This is another step in an effort to further understand the movements and migrations of this elusive species.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR & ARTIST
Guy Harvey is a unique blend of artist, scientist, diver, angler, adventurer and family man. Inspired at an early age by the sea around him, Guy Harvey enjoyed many hours fishing and diving from his father's canoe in his native Caribbean home of Jamaica.
From his early inspirations, Guy's natural gift to recreate marine life has propelled him from a Professor of Marine Biology to a full time marine wildlife artist. Although encouraged to pursue his love of art more seriously, Guy opted for scientific training, earning high honors in Marine Biology at Aberdeen University in Scotland in 1977. Upon returning home to Jamaica he continued his education and obtained a Ph.D. at the University of the West Indies. The countless hours of observation required to complete his thesis on the biology and ecology of coastal pelagic species served to further increase his knowledge of the marine environment.
His constant curiosity about the sea and its occupants keep Guy busily experimenting with new ways to recreate his subject.
As an avid scuba diver and skilled underwater photographer, Guy was the first to interact with most species of free swimming billfish. Teasers pulled behind the boat temporarily distract the billfish, giving Guy the opportunity to observe them in their natural predatory state. From Australia's Great Barrier Reef, Central and South America to the Portuguese island of Madeira off the Coast of Africa, Guy's canvas stretches across many oceans to depict his subject in lifelike settings unequaled anywhere.
As a conservationist, Guy has advocated catch and release for billfish and other gamefish throughout the world. He works closely with many conservation organizations to help protect fishery resources around the world. In 1988 he was voted The Billfish Foundation's Artist of the Year. In 1993 he was appointed Trustee of the International Game Fish Association. In May of 1997, in cooperation with the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo, Guy Harvey sponsored the 25th ship to be sunk as part of the ongoing artificial reef program. His contributions have made him one of the most respected conservationists in his field and he was the recipient of the first ever lifetime achievement award given by the IGFA World Fishing Awards Committee in 1999.
The Guy Harvey signature has become synonymous with compelling action and fine detail in marine wildlife art. His images are seen on fine art limited editions prints, silk screened and embroidered apparel, giftware, woven tapestry throws and even computer screen savers. New and exciting projects in the works include the production of a marine science television program and the development of gallery/gift stores throughout the US.
Guy travels the world in search of new inspiration, his dedication to his career is extraordinary. However, his family is the first and foremost consideration in juggling increased demand on his time. As a result, there is a new generation of Harveys demonstration the same love and concern of the sea that was ingrained in their father years ago. Guy's studio is in Grand Cayman.
