More Information
Did you know? Rainbow Trout became salmon in the mid-1980s, changing from genus Salmo to Onchyrhychus. Their species was gairdneri, which became mykiss to some classifiers, irideus to others, while others kept honoring Mr. Gairdner. In the hair-splitting game, I prefer irideus for rainbows and mykiss for steelhead (or vice versa), and I propose Salmo irideus if descriptive taxonomy ever overrules management politics.
