NITRO EXPRESS: SIMBA - GREAT MANED LION OF THE MOYOWOSI
Author: Mark Sullivan, Professional Hunter
Publisher: Nitro Express, Jul 2004
See four big maned lion taken right before your eyes. The furthest shot is just 38 yards away. The closest, taken by my then 18 year old son Shawn, a mere 28 yards! Filmed in the Moyowosi Game Reserve in Tanzania, 1992. DVD, 40 min.
The Moyowosi Game Reserve in 1992 was quite possibly the best hunting block in Tanzania for trophy lion. In that year conditions were perfect. Long grass that was usually found in the hunting areas had all but been cleared with the first fires. The heavy rains, due in March, had not come at all. And except for scattered pools of water hidden deep out into the Moyowosi floodplain, the entire region was dry as dust. The great buffalo herds had no choice but to cross miles of open ground and drink from this trecherous water source. It was easy pickings for lions and hunters alike.
Simba, the Swahili word for lion, evokes all kinds of emotions. But nothing can prepare you for the first time you actually see one. The sight of a great old male lion is unforgetable. Hearing one roar leaves an even deeper impression. In this movie you will see four big maned lion taken right before your eyes. The furthest shot is just 38 yards away. The closest, taken by my then 18 year old son Shawn, a mere 28 yards!
Shawn and I were out one day chasing down a flock of guinea fowl through a patch of long grass when we suddenly realized we were not alone. Directly ahead and only 40 yards away was a big male lion and lioness trotting quickly to put distance between us. We hot-footed it back to the truck, switched our shotguns for rifles and returned to track the lions to their resting place. It was atop a termite mound, from a distance of only 28 yards, that Shawn killed his first lion.
There are three more exciting hunts all beautifully filmed and edited. For those who love lions and lion hunting as I do, Simba is a must for your hunting library.
