For almost half a century Duane Bernard of Rainier, Oregon, has pursued a dream to hunt big game world-wide and to achieve what is called his native Oregon?s ?Super-Slam? on a common man?s budget, a feat he accomplished, and now he has shared a collection of stories about those adventures in a new book ? ?The Trail of a Sportsman? ? issued recently by the outdoor publishing firm Stoneydale Press of Stevensville, Montana. An author of many articles for national hunting magazines over the years, in his new book Bernard has written about hunting experiences in Montana, Idaho, British Columbia, New Mexico, Alaska, Quebec, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, as well as his native Oregon.
His book includes 27 chapters and 75 photographs of himself and those who shared the hunting experiences with him. Duane and his wife, Joanne, who joined him on most of his hunting adventures, currently live in Rainier, Oregon. They have four children, all of whom hunt. In a Foreword to the book, Larry D. Irwin, PhD, makes this comment: ?Duane?s lifetime adventures as a hunter are perhaps not unique, but are compelling and often gripping ... you can almost feel the chilling Alaskan winds biting your face, taste Joanne?s steaks, or smell the fresh mountain air.? Throughout the years, Bernard has also been active in conservation work with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Safari Club International, the National Rifle Association and the Oregon Hunter?s Association. He is past president of the Portland, Ore., chapter of SCI, and then went on to become regional representative for the organization covering Oregon, Washington and parts of Idaho and British Columbia, Canada. In these capacities he was on the SCI national board of directors for six years and currently is serving his first four-year term on the state of Oregon?s seven-member Access and Habitat Board. He has hunted extensively in North America and Africa and for 12 years owned Northwest Hunting Consultants, serving as a booking agent for other hunters. He has had articles published in Petersen?s Hunting, Hunt, Safari, Oregon Hunter magazine and the Oregon Record Book.
