Foreword by Peter Wheat; 100+ photos (some color); 8x10 inches, 176 pgs.
During the last decade or so, throughout England & elsewhere, barbel have become substantially larger & heavier, and the number of rivers with significant barbel populations has grown in number. This dramatic change has been accompanied by a substantial increase in the popularity of barbel angling as well as revolutionary changes in fishing methods, baits, rigs & tactics. Forty years ago a barbel weighing in excess of 10 lb. was regarded by most anglers as truly remarkable. Moreover, even in the early 1990s a barbel of 15 lb was a national record-breaker. In 2004 the quest to catch a 20 lb fish was realized and a barbel in the 23-24 lb class appears to be a distinct possibility.
It was against this background that Bob Church, one of Britain's foremost, and best-known anglers, decided to invite four remarkable barbel specialists, Peter Reading, Guy Robb, Ray Walton & Brian Dowling, to join him in writing this book which, as the title suggests, is devoted to the capture of large barbel. However, the sub-title of this volume is also extremely significant, since the friendship of all five anglers has been cemented both by their joy of, and devotion to, barbel fishing and also their united determiniation to catch really large specimens. Their enthusiasm for barbel fishing is infectious & this fascinating, informative & well-illustrated book, which contains both colour & black-and-white photographs, will be essential reading for barbel enthusiasts & anglers everywhere.
